Curriculum Aims
Psychology is widely available at degree level with many different types of courses. It is possible to study psychology in combination with other subjects and to study related subjects such as educational psychology, forensic psychology, clinical psychology, artificial intelligence etc. Psychologists work in a wide variety of contexts from clinical settings, prisons, business, to the media etc.
This course has been designed to provide a broad introduction to the scope and nature of psychology as a science. The emphasis is on applying knowledge and understanding rather than just acquiring knowledge thereby developing students’ transferable skills of analysis, evaluation and critical thinking. Psychology is a science subject concerned with the study of the mind and behaviour (what people do and how they act). It has links with a variety of other subjects such as biology, computer and forensic sciences, as well as with the humanities such as sociology, philosophy and literature. One of the most important qualities of people who study psychology is curiosity and the search for knowledge.
- develop essential knowledge and understanding of different areas of the subject and how they relate to each other
- develop and demonstrate a deep appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific methods
- develop competence and confidence in a variety of practical, mathematical and problemsolving skills
- develop their interest in and enthusiasm for the subject, including developing an interest in further study and careers associated with the subject
- understand how society makes decisions about scientific issues and how the sciences contribute to the success of the economy and society.
